| Dental Assistant's Activities A dental assistant is required to develop and exercise various skills. On an interpersonal basis, the dental assistant will greet a patient, seat the patient, take a medical history, take vital signs, provide instructions for oral care following dental procedures and assure that the patient is as informed and as comfortable as is possible. Different bodies of law govern the dental assistant's activities so these vary from state to state. Essentially, the dental assistant who works in the back office, or "chair side" will usually take x rays, set up barriers to prevent the spread of contamination, perform activities to prevent the spread of infection, sterilize equipment and dental instruments, discard contaminated materials according to mandated protocols, and assist the dentist during the dentist's delivery of restorative or other care. Dental assistants very commonly take alginate impressions of the patient's teeth and help to create study models of the patient's teeth. In the front office the dental assistant is called upon to perform an array of tasks that include scheduling patients for services, taking calls, reminding patients of appointments, perform insurance related, billing and other office related tasks, and even maintain an inventory of items required.
